WHAT IS TRUTH?

Most people of the world and especially the Americans like to think of themselves as free thinkers... independent and unencumbered by the philosophies of the Old World. It would appear that in the last few decades capitalism defeated communism, and the United States proved itself of being the leader in economics and human rights. In reality, many Americans as well as many people of other parts of the world have been undergoing profound changes in religion, political views and concepts of morality that will affect not only the future of the American nation but of the world as well.
What is truth? What is your truth? Can truth be known?
Wikipedia describes truth as the property of being in accord with fact or reality. In everyday language, truth is typically ascribed to things that aim to represent reality or otherwise correspond to it, such as beliefs, propositions, and declarative sentences. Truth is usually held to be the opposite of falsehood.
Essential Truth is not a thought but is the immediate reality of the moment.
So, what is truth? Let's examine what the Bible says about truth. In a simple way drawn from what the Bible teaches: Truth is that which is consistent with the mind, will, character, glory, and being of God. Even more to the point: Truth is the self-expression of God. That is the biblical meaning of truth. Because the definition of truth flows from God, truth is theological.
Truth is also ontological - which is a fancy way of saying it is the way things really are. Reality is what it is because God declared it so and made it so. Therefore God is the author, source, determiner, governor, arbiter, ultimate standard, and final judge of all truth.
Truth, in metaphysics and the philosophy of language, the property of sentences, assertions, beliefs, thoughts, or propositions that are said, in ordinary discourse, to agree with the facts or to state what is the case.
I was thinking about these questions this week after reading accounts about the interview done on American television by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markel. During the interview, various statements were made about Britain’s royal family. The most incendiary charge was racism, aimed at Ms. Markel who happens to be biracial. Is it true that some members of the family are racist? Was racist behavior aimed at her?
Opinions vary. No names were mentioned and perhaps only two people heard or saw a purported incident. Racism is an evil that has no place in human relations. But listening to the comments brought out the reality that everyone has their own truth. The absence of facts, firsthand proof or objective verification does not matter. "It is what I believe to be true that is true." "Get in line with my thinking, the right thinking!" Today’s social and cultural revolution pretty much follows that line.
All this leads to my following question: Can the Word of God hurt people? It is factual that no one should ever take the Bible, the Word of God, and use it to bully or intimidate people, hurt people or to harm people. Certainly that's not what God intended. God's intention is that all sinners come to repentance. But the Word of God is the Word of truth. And this same truth cuts to the heart of every issue and can impact every one of us. And if it makes us uncomfortable, if it wounds our conscience, and causes us to understand a need to repent and to change our life, then that's the purpose of the Word of God.
