Any good relationship is mutually beneficial and your relationship with an older person is no different. In our present society, our social circles relate to those whom we share emotional and day life experiences. To those who enjoy the same things in life and as a result your closest friends tend to around your own age. I want to stress and make relevant the fact that you must not discount the true value of making friends with those older than you, especially the ones that society label 'third-age'. Despite the age difference, you will probably be surprised how much you have in common. Do not forget, those 'third-age' citizens were once your age and faced many of the same 'growing pains' that common to younger people. They know all of the emotions and experiences you are now having because these are common life 'battles'.

Anytime that you ask an older person if he or she still feels young inside, nearly all of them will say that they do. This is a very important insight to have about those 'third-age' citizens. Because they now have bodies that are more frail and broken, you must avoid to assume that they are old and worn out in every way. Their physical limitations don't in any way diminish their tremendous value. You must respect, enrich and get a positive and lasting effect on your life with the comments of those whose experienced life before you.

"Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not life bring understanding?" (Job 12:12)

There are similar older people in your life right now and certainly you can benefit from them.

"Grey hair is a colour of splendour; it is attained by a righteous life." (Proverbs 16:31)

A long life is a sign of God's blessing, therefore grey hair and old age is good. While young people glory in their strength, 'old people' can rejoice in their years of experience and practical wisdom. Grey hair is not a sign of disgrace to be covered over; it is a crown of splendour. As you deal with older people, treat them with respect. Never overlook the treasure chest of wisdom such people can offer. To befriend older people, you may help both more than you realize. It is mutually beneficial!

(End of Part 1)

Next week we discuss the two major benefits to honour 'the grey head'.
